Becks Mill (Vaca2010)
Cotton Carder 4
Beck's Mill - second floor, June 2010
Evidently only 5 historical, operational cotton carding machines like this remain in the US today. I think these were originally imported from England in the early 1800's and were belt powered by the mill. Beck's Mill has 2 of them (1 pictured here) and the Smithsonian has 1 with the other 2 at other locations.
Beck's Mill was founded December 1807 by George Beck Sr. If you visit Southern Indiana (Salem, IN area - near Spring Mill State Park) make sure to go and see Beck's Mill! It's well worth the admission cost and the funds go to support the mill. Photos from before and during the recent restoration can be found on the Mill's website at http://www.friendsofbecksmill.org.
