Bridgeton Mill & Covered Bridge

The Bridgeton Covered Bridge crosses over the Bridgeton Mill pond which is created by the mill dam. The covered bridge being over a waterfall makes it "Indiana‘s Most Famous Covered Bridge." The bridge was original built in 1868, closed to traffic in 1968, tragically burned down in 2005 and then rebuilt in 2006.

During our visit the sun was high over head (not the best for photos), it was still opressively hot (over 100 degrees) and we were in the middle of a drought so waterfall wasn't as impressive as it normally would be. Still, the site and its features were impressive. I hope to return sometime in the future to shoot some better photos at a time when weather and lighting conditions are better. I'm actually wanting and hoping to do a bridge tour of all of Parke county (there's something like 33 covered bridges in the county) to enjoy capturing photos of and documenting them all.

The Bridgeton Mill was established in 1823 and rebuilt in 1870. It is the oldest continually operating mill in Indiana (Possibly the Midwest ). It's claim to fame is having been open every year for over 180 years. The waters of the Big Raccoon Creek power this historic mill which sits next to Indiana’s Most Famous Covered Bridge.
• Middle. Of. Nowhere.

So we crossed the McAllister covered bridge and ended up in the middle of nowhere on our way to Bridgeton. Somewhere in the middle of nowhere we came upon this scene. I liked the old farm buildings set with the trees, field and sky so I stopped to capture it.

Parke County, Indiana

This bridge crosses the Little Raccoon Creek on County Road South 80 East in Parke County. It's closed to traffic now and off the "main" road so I missed and drove past it on the way back from Bridgeton. Thankfully my wife noticed it and mentioned it so I turned around to grab a couple photos of yet another historic covered bridge.
The Narrows Covered Bridge crosses Sugar Creek in Turkey Run State Park on its eastern boarder in Parke County. The first few photos were taken Saturday evening (7/7/2012) after what seemed to be a long hike (about 25 minutes in temps around 100) on trail 1 in Turkey Run State Park. Unfortunately the sun had set too low for the bridge to be lit well by the time I arrived. The other photos were taken after our trip to Bridgeton.
